Jesus Christ Superstar

2001, Hamilton, ON (role: Jesus)

While researching for his solo show Bigger Than Jesus, Rick was cast as Jesus in Theatre Aquarius’ 2001 production of Jesus Christ Superstar.  Directed by Max Reimer, the play was a Christmas (!) hit, running in rep with another Lloyd-Webber/Tim Rice musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (in which Rick played Simeon).  Rick played opposite Jay Davis (Judas) and Cara Hunter (Mary Magdalene) in a faithfully-staged, critically-acclaimed production.

“Jesus Christ Superstar at Theatre Aquarius inspires superlatives.  Brilliant.  Awesome.  Magnificent.  Inspired. Humbling…. It all swirls around the gentle, beatific figure of Christ, portrayed with loving warmth by Rick Miller.  Miller perfectly embodies the charisma and strength of the Messiah.  He strikes that uneasy balance between the man and the myth as he ministers to his followers”  (VIEW Magazine, Hamilton, Dec 20, 2001)

“It’s without doubt the best production of the show I’ve seen… Miller plays Jesus with a fierce reverence.  He sings the role with assurance and power.”  (Gary Smith, The Hamilton Spectator, Dec 18, 2001)

“The Jesus of Rick Miller is powerful, particularly in his angry conversation with his father… the venomous torment reflected in the show’s most dramatic song, “Gethsemane”  (Alex Reynolds, ONTV News, Hamilton, Dec 20, 2001)
